2010 Motoring Awards...with a twist of Lugnut

Yes, it's that time of the year where, for the first time since I started this, I get to swap the tuxedo for some boardies as I am jetting off home for Christmas...provided YVR and LAX don't get snowed in over the next 24 hours.

Anyway, we've got a lot to get through and I'm sure you all don't want to hear me gloat over the fact that I'm going into summer while you are not...oops, don't read that bit.

Rookie of the Year - while Stenhouse did an amazing job to nab RotY in the Nationwide series, I have to say I was more impressed with Austin Dillon in the Trucks.

Race of the Year - it may not have been a race for the ages but I think given the names on the programme, the V8 Supercar 'Gold Coast 600' gets the nod in this one. The Said/Papis drag to the line at Montreal gets a very close second as it was the most exciting race all season.

Qualifier of the Year - for producing the best lap I've seen in a long time, in an underpowered car, on a greasy track, this one has to go to Nico Hulkenberg with his pole position at Brazil.

Team of the Year - Richard Childress Racing. Yes, Hendrick Motorsports won their fifth title on the trot and yes, Red Bull Renault walked away with both in F1 but considering where RCR were in 2009, they are mighty deserving of this one.

Pit Crew of the Year - tempted to give it to Jeff Gord...uh, Jimmie Johns...you see my problem here? Luckily, I don't have to as the winner of this can only be the Jim Beam Racing guys. Anyone who watched the final round of the V8's on Sunday will know what I'm talking about, but when 1, 2 and 3 in points all crashed on the wet track on the same lap at the same spot, the JBR #18 team got James Courtney's Ford back on track just in time to be classified a finisher while Jamie Whincup and Mark Winterbottom were DNF's. How important was it? Had James not been registered as finishing the race, the points battle would have been an absolute nailbiter going into Sunday's race.

Driver of the Year - a lot of worthy nominations but, I think ultimately, this one is pretty easy. Vader might have won five on the trot but he's still two behind Sebastien Loeb. The Frenchman won his seventh straight World Rally Championship...I still believe rally drivers are crazy.

Person of the Year - yeah, I was thinking Jim Hunter for this one as well.

Now on to the ones we really want to know:

Personality of the Year - with the new, gentler version of Kyle Busch seen leaving the JGR stable, that left us to look elsewhere for our entertainment...luckily for us, Brad Keselowski was there to fit the bill. He didn't have a great Cup season but he was pretty dang good in the Nationwide series.

Crash of the Year - Fabian Coulthard's barrel rolling effort in the Bathurst 1000 was mighty spectacular and he pips Keselowski for this one...although the pile up at Watkins Glen in the Nationwide race was higher on the funny scale.

Surprise of the Year - Juan Montoya. Considering how he blew Truex Jr out of the water in 2009, I have to say I thought he'd do the same to McMurray...it only took one race for Jamie to prove otherwise and, it seemed that Juan could never recover from that.

Miracle of the Year - Shame Hmiel.

Worst Looking Car Livery of the Year - can I give it to Denny Hamlin for not driving 'his' Sponsafier car? Didn't think so...so, it has to go to Matt Kenseth with his yellow and red effort of 'Jeramiah Weed' that he used at Charlotte in May. I reckon I can already given the 2011 one to Ambrose's Petty ones...they don't look that flash to me from the pictures.

Bone-headed Overtaking Attempt of the Year - Jeff Gordon at Sonoma. Take your pick, I'm pretty sure he hit someone on all 110 laps.

The 'Dental School' Award (who made the most jaws drop in a single moment) - race one of the Chase...I never thought I'd see the day that Loudon produced a corker of a race!

The 'Carved from Stone' Award - for not breaking in the face of one of the best F1 seasons ever, Sebastian Vettel did what he had to by winning the final two races and becoming the youngest champ in F1 history.

The 'Red Bull' Award - Brad Keselowski's ride at Atlanta looked to have this one all done and dusted...until Mark Webber's flyover of Valencia that is.

The 'Lucky Bugger' Award - Dario Franchitti...I presume he sent the Penske team some flowers after they screwed up Will Power's pitstop at Chicago, focring him into making a splash and go with five laps remaining. Dario went on to win the race before mowing down Will in the points to win back-to-back titles in Homestead.

The 'Anthony Hudson' Award - Jimmie Johnson wins this one for his so called 'bumpdraft' on Kurt Busch at Pocono. I'm not exactly sure what Hendrick Motorsports has against Penske's #2 but just when you think "he's not going to hit Kurt again is he?", he proves you wrong. I bet Brad will be rather nervous when he sees any HMS cars around him in 2011.

The 'Top Gear' Award - have to agree with Gene and give it to Danica. All the hype, having had her best year in Indycars in 2009, she didn't exactly set the tintop racing world on fire when she graced the Nationwide series with her presence.

The 'Brett Favre' Award (best comeback) - Kyle Busch made a huge push for this one with his Truck drive at Bristol in August but, I think this guy deserves it more...Jamie McMurray.

So, hopefully, that's it from me for 2010 from the Northern hemisphere. I hope everyone has a wonderful Christmas and a great New Year.

Tom Walkinshaw: 1946 - 2010

Tom Walkinshaw passed away over the weekend after battling with cancer. If you're wondering who Mr Walkinshaw is, here's a brief montage of his involvement in motorsport (founder of Tom Walkinshaw Racing) around the globe for the last couple of decades.

Cutting his teeth in sportscars, he put Jaguar back on the map at LeMans.

The 7 time F1 champ won his first title in 1994.

Buying the underachieving Arrows team, he nearly pulled off a miracle win with Hill in 1997.

Yep, he was also a big reason why HRT are still top tier in the V8 Supercars.

He was 64 and leaves behind his wife, Martine, and two children, Ryan and Sean.

R.I.P. Wayne (not just another Dale Earnhardt fan)

Born January 13, 1952, to the late Bill Powell and Dorothy Blalock Powell Watson, Wayne was the oldest of two children. He was followed by a brother, Tommy Watson. He joined an extended family, George and Glinda Blalock and their two daughters, Beverly and Cindy. Married to the late Janice Yates, but later divorced, Wayne remained single until his death on December 4, 2010. Wayne was an avid fisherman, loved racing, loved his friends and watching his big screen TV! He never turned away a stray dog and owned several dobermans during his lifetime. His trade was an auto body repairman. He graduated from Athens Tech but learned more from his Uncle George who was about the best around when it came to fixing a wrecked car! Wayne worked for Boswell Motors, Brack Rowe Chevrolet and Barrett Dodge among others, and after his Uncle George retired, he helped his uncle with odd jobs occassionally. Wayne will be remembered for his love of music, the Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd, southern rock, even partying with the Allman Brothers in Macon, GA back in the day. He met Ronnie McDowell and attended a lot of his concerts. Wayne left this world with an humble heart, healed from pain of a disfunctional family, and headed to a place called Heaven where he would meet Jesus, his parents, grandparents, his Uncle George and Dale Earnhardt! We will miss you, Wayne!

Wayne, above in these photos, with Kevin Perry, who I babysat until I got married! Wayne is in the white t-shirt and at the top, with Kevin's family and crew at Peach State Speedway, now known as Gresham Motorsports Park.

I'll miss my big brother and I miss you guys, too. Maybe the internet will return soon and I can comment on your posts. Right now I can read it but can't comment on my cell phone. But there is life out there and I'll carry on! Love you, guys!

2010 Motorsport Awards...Lugnuts style

Yes, it's getting to that time of year again where we (well, more 'I' I suppose since I write it...but you guys contribute too!) dish out the prestigious awards from all motorsport categories around this planet. Sadly, despite Kristen's best protests, I cannot include horseracing as they don't have a combustion engine...even though you can measure them in horsepower.

Here's the link to last years so you can see how we do this thing.

On to the categories:
- Rookie of the Year
- Race of the Year
- Qualifier of the Year (or qualifying lap of the year)
- Team of the Year
- Pit Crew of the Year
- Driver of the Year
- Person of the Year
- Personality of the Year
- Crash of the Year
- Surprise of the Year
- Miracle of the Year
- Worst looking car livery of the Year
- Bone-headed passing attempt of the Year
- Dental School Award
- Carved from stone Award
- Red Bull Award
- Lucky Bugger Award

I'm adding a few new categories this year:
The 'Anthony Hudson' Award - Mr Hudson is an Australian AFL commentator who said during a match "I see it, but I do not believe it!". This differs from the Dental School Award as this one includes those moments where you go "I bet....happens" and, not even five minutes later, it does.

The 'Top Gear' Award - their motto is 'ambitious, but rubbish' and refers to the challenges the shows Producers give them (designing a car that can be used as a space shuttle for example). This award is geared towards those people and/or teams that talked the talk but required alternate means of transport to walk the walk instead.

The 'Brett Favre' Award - no, not for 'that pass', but his comebacks instead. Whether it's a team/person who was nowhere last year but a star in 2010 or looked down and out during a race yet found a way back to the front, this one's for you.

Remember, any motorsport category can be nominated (from DTM to NHRA to WRC...I won't exclude anything) and, if you can, any links to videos would be helpful (thinking of the Bone-head awards) in making the final choices :)

And so, with the Chase looking to be a three horse race....pun very much intended after CR and my dismal effort last night with swapping a Prancing Horse for a Wounded Bull....can anyone make this race interesting and push the grandfather clock on top of Vader and the Hamster?

Other questions:
- will the non-chasers pinch a second race from the top 12?
- will anyone finish the race without any damage at all on their car (pace car included)?
- will Jeff Burton smack that wall that juts out at the start of his pit box?
- how much profit will Tums make with all those hotdogs that'll be sold today?

The Trifecta- Hot Diggity Dog Edition

Greetings, race fans. Time once again to get your picks in for the Trifecta, but before you go running off to the concession stand for a Martinsville hot dog, there is an administrative matter to take care of.

CR was found to be in violation of Section K9 of the Trifecta rules (click here for details). After a meeting in the big black, tan and white hauler, CR was fined 15 doggy treats and placed on scooper duty for this weekend's races.

Now that the unpleasantness :o) is out of the way, let's get on to the races:

Tim Richmond 30 for 30

Tonight, Tuesday 10-19-10, A Tim Richmond documentary airs on ESPN at 8pm ET. Richmond was one of a kind. The best way I could describe him would be that he was a cross between Joe Namath and Evel Knievel... that kind of talent and charisma.

For those that got into NASCAR after Richmond's time, this is a chance to see how it used to be.... back in the good old days.

ESPN Press Release.....

Tim Richmond Featured in Tuesday Night ESPN ’30 for 30’ Film

Former NASCAR driver Tim Richmond, a star of the sport before his death from AIDS in 1989, will be the subject of a documentary airing on Tuesday, Oct. 19, at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN as part of ESPN Films’ critically acclaimed film series 30 for 30 Presented by Cadillac.

Tim Richmond: To the Limit, produced for ESPN by the Emmy-winning NASCAR Media Group, tells the story of Richmond with the words of many who knew him well and some who competed against him on the track. Former NASCAR drivers Darrell Waltrip and Richard and Kyle Petty, champion team owner Rick Hendrick, movie director Hal Needham, famed racing promoter H.A. “Humpy” Wheeler, ESPN reporters Dr. Jerry Punch and Ed Hinton, Richmond’s sister Sandy Welsh and friends from his hometown of Ashland, Ohio, are among those appearing in the film.

Click HERE to view a trailer of the film.

NASCAR Boss Going Under Cover

No, it's not Brian France; however, on this Sunday's episode of Undercover Boss (CBS), Steve Phelps- NASCAR Senior VP and Chief Marketing Officer- will be going undercover within the NASCAR organization. The preview for the show showed him mostly working at race tracks and with race teams as a pit crew member. This brings up a whole slew of questions.

1.) Kristen, as a member of the NASCAR Fan Council, what if anything can you tell us about Mr. Phelps?

2.) How deep in the bowels of NASCAR does he work? It seems to me that the Chief Marketing Officer would be pretty well known by most of the race teams.

3.) NASCAR maintains that the race teams are independent contractors. Doesn't a NASCAR officer going undercover as a race team member contradict that?

4.) Will we see any noticeable changes in NASCAR because of this or is Brain-dead just humoring the disgruntled masses?

Ready, set, discuss.

The Trifecta- Home on the Range Edition

Greetings, race fans! This week's Trifecta finds us "Home on the Range" (Kansas's state song) for NASCAR action with a side trip to Miami for Indy Car's season finale.

Despite a valiant effort by Kristen and moseby last week (both were one win away from a perfect score) Tez managed to hold on for the win and take the lead in the chase for the Coveted Triple Lug Nut Trophy. No need to panic, though. With six races still left on the schedule, everyone is still in the hunt (of course, it would take JJ-like domination for some of us to pull it off).

This week's races:

1.) The NASCAR Nationwide Series race from Kansas, Saturday October 2; green flag drops at 3:46pm ET (entry list)

2.) The IRL season finale from Homestead/Miami, Saturday October 2; green flag drops at 7:00pm ET (entry list)

3.) The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race from Kansas, Sunday October 3; green flag drops at 1:16pm ET (entry list)

Wild and wacky rulings

With the talk about the #33 car being an ant's...uh, leg width outside the limits, I figured we could have a post about what you reckon is the worst/weirdest/silliest/etc penalty you've witnessed in motorsport?

For me, there are two that stand out, both in F1; Montoya's drive-through in the 2002 Malaysian GP when he went side-by-side with Michael Schumacher, who understeered into the Williams yet Juan was judged to be in the wrong despite leaving the Ferrari plenty of room...he still went on to finish second that day.

The second being the 2008 Belgian race which saw a titanic scrap on a damp track at the end between Kimi Raikkonen and Lewis Hamilton. Lewis slithered past at the bus-stop chicane but missed his braking point so he gave the spot back to Kimi before nailling him under brakes for the hairpin. Unfortunately, the officials said Lewis hadn't given Kimi enough time ahead and slapped 20 seconds onto his finishing time which gifted the win to Kimi's teammate, Felipe Massa, after the Finn had crashed on the last lap.

Over to you guys...got any head-scratchers?

The Trifecta- We Are Family Edition

Greetings, race fans. By now, you're wondering what the heck does the title for this week's Trifecta have to do with racing. The answer is simple- absolutely nothing. I've been researching my family tree and found some pretty interesting things. So that got my curiosity up and brings us to this -week's totally non -racing question-
Who's the most interesting person in your family tree?

And who knows? We might find out that some of us are distant cousins.

On to the races-

1.) The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race from Las Vegas, Saturday September 25; green flag drops at 9:49pm ET (entry list).

2.) The NASCAR Nationwide Series race from Dover, Saturday September 25; green flag drops at 3:45pm ET (entry list)

3.) The F1 Singapore Grand Prix, Sunday, September 26; green flag drops at 8:00am ET (entry list)

4.) The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race from Dover, Sunday September 26; green flag drops at 1:15pm ET (entry list)

Good luck, and let's go racing!!

Bowyer Cheated

Post race inspections on Clint Bowyer's winning Chevy, Sunday at NHMS resulted in a 150 point deduct and six week suspensions for his crew chief and car chief.

What a way to kick off the Chase!

It seems that parts of the #33 RCR Chevy did not match the pre-scanned barcodes that NASCAR had on record. Two weeks ago at Richmond NASCAR officials warned RCR that the #33 had pushed the envelope as far as possible, and gave the team a warning.

The Trifecta- And So It Begins Edition

Greetings, race fans. Time once again for that easiest of all fantasy racing games, the Trifecta. This week's races find the Chase for the Sprint Cup gearing up, while the Indy guys and gals are winding down their season.

In the chase for the Coveted Triple Lug Nut trophy, we have a three-way tie between CR, tez, and hanny with 4 wins each. Klv and moseby are hot on their heels with 3 wins each. Jon and Athens each have two wins, and well, let's just say that Dwindy and the Beagle are still in it mathematically.

On to this week's races:

1.) The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race from New Hampshire, Saturday September 18; green flag drops at 3:19pm ET (entry list)

2.) The IRL race from Japan, Sunday September 19; green flag drops at 12:00am(midnight) ET (entry list)

3.) The NASCAR Sprint Cup race from New Hampshire, Sunday September 19; green flag drops at 1:15pm ET (entry list)

Please check the entry lists to make sure your driver is entered in the race.

Good luck, and let's go racing!

(Sorry about that, race fans. Unfortunately as the Trifecta was heading to post, Katie- our intrepid news hound- uncovered some disturbing news from the Duncan yo-yo factory.)

3.) The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race from Bristol, Saturday August 21; green flag drops at 7:43pm ET (entry list)

4.) The IRL race from Sonoma, Sunday August 22; green flag drops at 5:50pm ET

Too much going on today for a long post. I'll have pics and inside info tomorrow. Still looks like it may rain at any minute. Should be some great action tonight. I've got some good pics already and interviewed some crew members while they prepped the pits.

These drivers are great with the fans, especially the little kids. They let anyone on pit road before the race and the drivers were all there to sign autographs and pose for pics with the fans. NASCAR at least does one thing right, as this goes a long way to build future fans with the youngsters.

NASCAR Question of the Moment

So, I've been reading comments on various NASCAR sites, and curiosity got the better of me. Still, it is an interesting premise. Your question for today is:

If your favorite driver signed with a team that you absolutely despised(Hendrick, Roush, etc.), would you still follow that driver?
