In the Name of the Father

NY Times Magazine piece on Dale Jr. Kinda long, but very insightful.

  1. Ugh - the psychological damage Sr caused him just pains me to no end and the way he is hen-pecked and controlled by PR, fans, media and NASCAR is just insane. He should just get out now...

...and come live with me! LOL

Thanks for posting Gene I would have never seen this...

  2. Have to feel sorry for the guy. Most of the stories I read on athletes or celebrities I can tell that they're B.S. Not with Jr.

It reminds me of the Hank Williams Jr story. Iconic father, built in fan base, could do no wrong. Hank Jr had to hit rock bottom, and come back and do his own thing. Maybe Dale Jr will be much better off as an owner only?

  3. Pretty interesting reaction on twitter from Junior's diehard fans - mostly they were offended by the article and thought it didnt represent Junior at all. Good God people WAKE UP!! SHeeeshh

I think Jr will be much better off as an owner or even retire out of the sport and start making video racing games...whatever and the sooner the better as far as his sanity goes. Course I'll miss him horribly but it would be better than seeing him be a back marker every week.

  4. Thanks for the heads up Gene.

A good analogy with Hank Jr. too.

This is one of those tragedies that plays out in front of the whole world. I don't know if there will ever be a salvation for him. Maybe a good woman but he's got to be leery... He'll find his way through life one way or another and whatever he decides to do, we'll all know about it very quickly.

Hard to identify with Dale Earnhardt Jr.
